Prof. Shou-cheng Zhang (1963-2018), a renowned theoretical physicist known for his pioneering work on quantum Hall effect, high Tc superconductivity, quantum spin Hall and topological insulators, passed away on Dec. 1, 2018 at the age 55. He was the J.G. Jackson and C.J. Wood Professor in Physics at Stanford University and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Shou-cheng's seminal contributions to condensed matter physics were recognized by numerous awards and prizes including the Buckley Prize, the Dirac Medal, the Europhysics Prize, the Physics Frontiers Prize and the Benjamin Franklin Medal. Shou-Cheng was also the inaugural recipient of the OCPA Outstanding Young Researcher Award (OYRA Macronix Prize) in 1992 and a close friend and participant of OCPA. We at OCPA were saddened by his unexpected death. He will be greatly missed.
